Sustainability
The Vissla New Seas 3-2 wetsuit is a good choice for surfers looking for a model with a reduced environmental impact. To start, Vissla uses limestone-based neoprene in all its suits, including the New Seas, which wouldn’t meet our criteria for low-impact rubber on its own. However, this suit also incorporates Carbon Black derived from recycled tires, recycled rubber, and oyster shells in its neoprene formulation, significantly reducing the carbon impact of the wetsuit. The suit also uses recycled materials in the lining fabric and neoprene, and Aqua-Alpha water-based lamination is used to hold the materials together. This is a solvent-free adhesive, which doesn’t emit harmful chemicals such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the environment during production. Additionally, all jersey materials in Vissla wetsuits are produced in Bluesign-approved facilities. However, the suit is not labeled as PFAS free, so it is likely that forever chemicals are used in its construction.
As a company, Vissla has made meaningful progress in reducing its packaging impact by partnering with Vela to replace plastic poly bags with 100% Forest Stewardship Council-certified, curbside-recyclable paper packaging. Through its Stoke Exchange program with Suga, the brand also promotes wetsuit recycling, turning old suits into yoga mats. Additionally, wetsuits can be sent back to Vissla for any type of repair, but the brand does charge a fee if the suit is no longer under warranty. However, Vissla has not released any carbon emissions data or set clear reduction targets. While the company shares sustainability updates online, it does not publish a comprehensive annual impact report, leaving room for improved transparency and accountability. Vissla uses innovation and environmental responsibility to make the New Seas 3-2 a relatively sustainable option for the eco-conscious surfer.
Below we break down in detail all of the New Seas 3-2's sustainability attributes at the product and brand level, including links to in-depth articles on relevant topics.
