Sustainability
REI Co-op’s Half Dome 2 is rated in the upper tier for sustainability in backpacking tents. REI keeps sustainability front-of-mind at the brand level while integrating several sustainable materials into its tents. The Half Dome 2’s mesh in the tent body is solution-dyed, which uses less energy and water than traditional dying method. Additionally, the tent’s durable water-repellent coating is PFAS-free. The tent, however, does not contain recycled materials or Bluesign-approved materials. To top it off, the Half Dome 2 is flame-retardant free, preventing harmful chemicals like volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from entering the environment during production. These chemicals are typically used to tape tent seams together.
As far as company-level sustainability goes, REI has implemented numerous impressive programs to limit waste and keep gear in use. Its Re/Supply resale program buys back old tents in usable condition in exchange for an REI gift card. Additionally, REI has reduced the quantity of packaging for its products and has nearly eliminated the use of polybags. When packaging is required, REI uses mostly Forest Stewardship Council-certified or recycled paper-based packaging rather than plastic. Finally, REI tracks its carbon emissions and produces a comprehensive annual impact report that outlines its progress on sustainability each year. Notably, the company does not provide in-house repair services for its products. Still, the REI Half Dome 2 is a good choice for sustainability.
Below we break down in detail all of the Half Dome 2's sustainability attributes at the product and brand level, including links to in-depth articles on relevant topics. For more, see our guide to the best backpacking tents and our review of the Half Dome 2.
