Sustainability
Updated:
Apr 13, 2026The Copper Spur UL3 XL is an average choice for a sustainably made backpacking tent. To start, it incorporates some solution-dyed materials in the tent body fabric. New for 2025, the Copper Spur’s durable water-repellent coating is PFAS free, aligning with Big Agnes’s commitment to eliminating forever chemicals from its products. However, the Copper Spur’s fabrics do not contain recycled or Bluesign-approved materials, unlike the Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2, which receives a higher sustainability rating. On the positive side, the seam tape used on the Copper Spur is free from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
On the company level, Big Agnes reduces packaging waste by eliminating individual poly bags from most tent poles and using only Forest Stewardship Council-certified paperboard packaging. The company tracks its greenhouse gas emissions using Change Climate’s Business Emissions Evaluator but has yet to publish an impact report detailing its sustainability progress or emissions data. We were unable to confirm whether Big Agnes participates in any responsible manufacturing certification programs. However, the company offers extensive repair services, from replacing missing or broken parts to repairing damaged tents for a fee. It also provides comprehensive recycling services. If a Big Agnes tent is beyond repair, the company will accept it back to furnish replacement parts, recycle materials, or donate usable components to partner organizations. As a thank you, customers who return an unrepairable tent receive credit toward new gear.
Below, we break down in detail all of the Copper Spur UL3 XL's sustainability attributes at the product and brand level, including links to in-depth articles on relevant topics. For more, see our guide to the best backpacking tents and our review of the Copper Spur UL3 XL.
