Sustainability
The Salomon X Ultra 5 Mid GTX contains noteworthy sustainability elements for a hiking boot. Its standout features include a PFAS-free waterproof membrane and durable water-repellent (DWR) coating. Additionally, the boot’s leather upper comes from suppliers certified to Leather Working Group (LWG) standards. The boot also has some fabrics made of recycled materials; however, Salomon does not specify which fabrics those are.
On the packaging front, Salomon uses 100% recycled plastic bags and has eliminated filling paper from some shoe boxes, saving over 40 tons of paper per year. Salomon tracks its carbon footprint through the Higg Index and reports on its emissions reduction progress in an annual impact report. Some of its suppliers are audited by Fair Trade, while other manufacturing facilities operate in Europe under strict environmental management standards. The brand’s biggest shortcoming is its lack of a resale or recycling program for used boots, an area where competitors are making progress. Overall, the X Ultra 5 Mid GTX is a compelling option for hikers who prioritize sustainability in their trail footwear.
Below we break down in detail all of the X Ultra 5 Mid GTX's sustainability attributes at the product and brand level, including links to in-depth articles on relevant topics. For more, see our guide to the best hiking boots and our review of the X Ultra 5 Mid.
