Sustainability
Like many Keen products, the Targhee IV Mid is a noteworthy choice for sustainability among hiking boots. The leather is sourced from Leather Working Group (LWG)-certified suppliers, and both the waterproof membrane and durable water-repellent treatment (DWR) are PFAS free. Keen has been a leader in eliminating PFAS, maintaining rigorous chemical testing since 2018 to ensure all its products remain free from these harmful chemicals. Additionally, the Targhee IV Mid incorporates 100% recycled polyester textiles, webbing, and laces. However, the boot does not contain Bluesign-approved materials.
Keen has made substantial progress in reducing its environmental impact, but has room for improvement in some areas. The brand has been tracking its carbon footprint since 2021 and publishes an annual impact report detailing its sustainability goals and progress. It has also made efforts to incorporate recycled materials into its shoeboxes and reduce its packaging volume. Keen audits its factories against a supplier Code of Conduct, but does not participate in a rating or certification program to ensure that factories meet fair labor standards. Still, the brand launched its ReKeen resale program in 2024, which sells gently used Keen shoes. While Keen could improve by launching a repair and recycling program for used gear, it has made good progress in other areas of our criteria.
Below we break down in detail all of the Targhee IV Mid Waterproof's sustainability attributes at the product and brand level, including links to in-depth articles on relevant topics. For more, see our guide to the best hiking boots and our review of the Targhee IV Mid.
