Sustainability
The La Sportiva Nucleo High II GTX ranks among the top hiking boots for sustainability. Its insoles contain 20% recycled materials, while the laces are made from 100% recycled polyester. This Gore-Tex boot is also PFAS free in all aspects of its waterproofing, part of La Sportiva’s broader effort to eliminate PFAS from its products. Additionally, the company sources all its leather in accordance with Leather Working Group (LWG) standards. However, the boot does not incorporate Bluesign-approved materials.
At the brand level, La Sportiva has achieved Carbon Neutral Certified status by tracking its greenhouse gas emissions through the Change Climate Project and offsetting its impact via carbon credits. The company also provides transparency on its sustainability efforts through an annual impact report. While La Sportiva has made meaningful strides in emissions tracking and material sourcing, it does not currently offer a resale or recycling program for used gear. However, its shoeboxes are made of Forest Stewardship Council-certified materials, and La Sportiva uses recycled poly bags. Lastly, the company does not participate in any third-party responsible manufacturing certification programs. Despite these gaps, the Nucleo remains highly rated for its sustainability.
Below we break down in detail all of the Nucleo High II GTX's sustainability attributes at the product and brand level, including links to in-depth articles on relevant topics. For more, see our guide to the best hiking boots and our review of the Nucleo High II GTX.
