Sustainability
While the Nemo Tensor Elite does not use low-impact materials such as Bluesign-approved fabrics or recycled components, it’s still a good choice for sustainability due to Nemo’s efforts as a brand. The Tensor comes with a repair kit for in-the-field fixes, and you can send your pad back to Nemo if it needs more extensive repair. Nemo will fix non-warranty repairs for a fee, while a lifetime warranty covers manufacturing defects. The company uses recycled plastic, paper, and cardboard for its packaging. It has actively cut down on waste through initiatives like the 100K Polybag Elimination Project, which aims to jettison 100,000 plastic bags from Nemo’s supply chain. As a member of the How2Recycle (H2R) program, Nemo helps consumers properly dispose of packaging materials through directions on product labels.
Nemo also tracks its carbon footprint, and it set emissions reduction targets in 2020 that were approved by the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi). The company releases an annual impact report with updates on its emissions reduction progress and other initiatives to lower its impact. Lastly, Nemo teamed up with Out&Back to offer a trade-in program, allowing customers to exchange used gear for Nemo gift cards or cash. All in all, the Tensor Elite is a solid sustainability option thanks to Nemo’s brand initiatives. However, Nemo’s Quasar 3D Insulated stands out as an even more sustainable sleeping pad, as it features recycled and Bluesign-approved materials.
Below we break down in detail all of the Tensor Elite's sustainability attributes at the product and brand level, including links to in-depth articles on relevant topics. For more, see our guide to the best backpacking sleeping pads and our review of the Tensor Elite.
