It’s not a belay parka, and it’s not a high-output piece—but for cold-weather hiking, travel, and winter cragging sessions, it’s one of the most comfortable jackets Arc’teryx makes.

Arc’teryx’s Atom line is well-known amongst the active insulation cohort, but the Arc’teryx Atom SV, the heaviest jacket in the line, takes a slightly different approach. It features 120-gram synthetic Coreloft insulation in the body, a material that’s far warmer than the 40-gram fill in the Atom SL and the 60-gram standard Atom. (The SV also has lighter, 60-gram insulation under the arms to help regulate heat in that area.) The build makes it much warmer than most active midlayers, but this is still a jacket that’s designed for movement in cold weather—just make sure you pick the right conditions and activities.
I wore the Arc’teryx Atom SV extensively in the Alps in late October, including time in Chamonix and Zermatt. In Chamonix, with temperatures hovering in the low 40s, I overheated quickly while hiking uphill and found myself shedding the jacket within 20 minutes. That confirmed what became obvious over time: This jacket really wants cold temperatures. Once temps dropped into the 30s and below, its comfort and performance improved significantly.
In Zermatt, in colder and snowy conditions, the Atom SV was outstanding for walking around town, shooting photos, and standing outside for extended periods. That said, one night waiting outdoors for a mountain train, with the temperature around 18 degrees with strong wind, it became clear that the Atom isn’t designed for static warmth; even with it layered over a base layer and a fleece, I had to keep moving to stay comfy. If you’re on a leisurely winter hike (rather than, say, a higher-output activity like a trail run), or doing errands around a snowbound town, though, this jacket is just the ticket.
Simply put, the Atom SV is one of the coziest synthetic jackets I’ve ever worn. The 20-denier nylon lining is silky and smooth, the insulation feels evenly distributed, and the weight (14.6 oz. for a women’s small) is low enough that the jacket feels more like a soft hug than a bulky puffy. I’ve caught myself wearing it around the house just because it feels good.
Mobility is excellent for a jacket this warm. Stretchy underarm panels and gusseted construction make movement feel natural, whether I’m hiking, scrambling, or just hanging out. Compared to trimmer down jackets like the Arc’teryx Cerium Hoody, the Atom SV’s regular fit is a huge advantage—it layers easily, never feels restrictive, and offers better overall comfort during long days.
The wrist cuffs are a standout detail: They’re soft, form-fitting, and great at sealing out drafts. The fleece-lined hand pockets are another highlight and perhaps my favorite feature—they make a huge difference in cold weather and add to the Atom SV’s cozy feel. The collar is also comfortable when fully zipped and never feels scratchy or tight. Rather than feeling like just a tool to use against the cold, this jacket feels like a warm welcome.
For how warm it is, the Atom SV breathes surprisingly well—assuming you’re using it in the right conditions. Arc’teryx clearly kept thermal regulation in mind, designing the Atom with lighter insulation (60g instead of 120g) and stretch panels in the underarms. In the women’s version, those breathable zones are focused around the pits rather than extending down the side panels, which I actually prefer as someone who runs cold.
When worn in appropriate temperatures—roughly 35 degrees and below—the Atom SV manages moisture well and never feels clammy. I’ve worn it on windy coastal hikes in the mid-30s and found it to be the perfect layer for steady movement. Overheating only happens when I push it into warmer conditions or wear it during higher-output climbs.
Compared to other synthetic insulated jackets I’ve worn, like the Cotopaxi Capa, the Atom SV feels much better designed for activity. It’s not a high-output piece like the Atom SL or the Patagonia Nano-Air Ultralight, but for mid- to low-output movement in cold weather, its breathability is sufficient.
For how warm and protective it is, the Arc’teryx Atom SV feels impressively light on my body—but it’s not especially compact when you pack it. My women’s XS weighed 14.3 ounces on my scale, which is right in line with Arc’teryx’s listed specs. (For comparison, the regular women’s Atom weighs 11.3 oz., while the women’s Patagonia Nano Puff Hoody weighs 12.3 oz.)
Unlike the SL and the regular Atom, it doesn’t stuff into a pocket or come with a stuff sack. Rolled into its hood, the SV packs down to about the size of a small climbing helmet. That’s reasonable for day hikes, travel, or throwing into a large bag—but it’s not the jacket I’d bring on a backpacking mission where every liter matters. Within the Atom lineup, it’s clearly the least packable option. I reach for it when I want dependable warmth and weather protection, not when I’m counting grams.
Weather protection is one of the Atom SV’s strengths—and one reason it outperforms many synthetic insulated jackets I’ve used. I tested it across a wide range of wet, windy, and snowy conditions in the Alps and along the northern coast of Spain, and in light drizzle, mist, and damp coastal air, the Atom SV beaded water well and kept me completely dry underneath—even during hour-long walks. In steady rain, it will eventually wet out (usually after 20 minutes or so), but the synthetic insulation would continue to keep me warm. I’ve repeated these tests many times, and heat retention has never been an issue.
Wind protection is also excellent, as with the rest of the Atom line. In exposed coastal conditions with constant gusts, the Atom SV has been my go-to jacket all winter. The cuffs, regular cut, cinchable hem, and well-designed hood all contribute to sealing out drafts. Compared to other insulated jackets—including down models—the Atom SV offers better weather resistance, likely thanks to its continuous synthetic insulation (no stitched baffles for wind and water to sneak through). It’s not a replacement for a shell, but for about everything short of sustained rain or heavy snow, it performs extremely well.

Longevity
Choosing durable outdoor gear and keeping it in use for longer is one of the best ways to reduce environmental impact. Bluesign Approved
Bluesign Technologies, based in Switzerland, operates a third-party textile management system that ensures materials are manufactured to strict environmental, chemical, and worker safety standards. A green check mark indicates a product is either a Bluesign Product (contains at least 90% Bluesign-approved fabrics and 20-30% Bluesign-approved accessories) or features a significant amount of Bluesign-approved materials. A yellow check mark means it uses some Bluesign-approved materials but less than the aforementioned category, and a red X means there are no Bluesign-approved materials in the product.
PFAS-Free DWR
Durable water-repellent (DWR) finishes can contain PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). These highly persistent “forever chemicals” are used in outdoor gear for their strong resistance to water, oil, and heat, but are linked to environmental contamination and a range of health concerns. A green check mark indicates the product uses a PFAS-free DWR, while a red X means the DWR contains PFAS.
Responsible Manufacturing
This criterion evaluates a brand’s commitment to fair wages, safe working conditions, and reducing environmental impact through certifications and programs like Fair Trade Certified, Fair Wear Foundation, Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP), and the Fair Labor Association, while also recognizing brands that manufacture primarily in the U.S. or Europe under strict labor and environmental regulations. A green check mark indicates a brand meets our responsible manufacturing criteria, while a red X means it does not.
Recycled and/or Reduced Packaging
Packaging can add significant waste to outdoor gear purchases, so many brands work to reduce its impact by using recycled materials, incorporating Forest Stewardship Council-certified paper products, and minimizing plastic and paper use. A green check mark indicates a brand uses recycled or reduced materials across all of its packaging, a yellow check indicates moderate or limited use of recycled or reduced packaging, and a red X indicates the brand does not make either of these efforts.
Repair Services

Carbon Footprint Tracking
This criterion evaluates whether a brand measures, reports, and works to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions using established frameworks such as the Higg Index, Greenhouse Gas Protocol, or The Change Climate Project. A green check mark indicates a brand publicly reports greenhouse gas emissions data, sets clearly defined reduction targets, and uses established tracking frameworks such as Higg or The Change Climate Project. A yellow check mark indicates the brand tracks emissions and outlines reduction goals but provides limited data, lacks science-based verification, or does not clearly report progress. Annual Impact Report
Annual impact reports provide transparency and accountability by outlining a brand’s sustainability efforts across areas such as material sourcing, greenhouse gas emissions, waste, water use, supply chains, and packaging. A green check mark indicates a brand publishes a detailed, brand-specific impact report that closely aligns with our sustainability criteria and leaves little room for ambiguity. A yellow check indicates a brand provides some relevant sustainability reporting but lacks detail in key areas or is covered only briefly within a parent company report. A red X indicates a brand does not regularly publish an impact report.
After roughly four months of steady use, the Arc’teryx Atom SV is holding up very well. I’ve worn it for hiking, travel, daily walks, carrying firewood, and general winter life. The 30-denier nylon shell fabric still looks great, with no tears or structural damage.
The only visible wear is cosmetic: a bit of fabric wear near the top of the zipper from contact with my face, and minor pilling at the wrist cuffs. Neither affects performance. All zippers run smoothly, the seams are clean, and the hardware feels more robust than on the lighter Atom models. Overall, the build quality is excellent and exactly what I expect from Arc’teryx.
The Atom SV keeps things simple. It has two fleece-lined hand pockets that are generously sized and perfectly placed for hiking or everyday use. They easily fit a phone, gloves, or a headlamp, and the lining adds a lot of comfort in cold weather. There’s no chest pocket, but I don’t miss it.
The hood is excellent. It’s fully insulated, helmet compatible, and has a rear drawcord that’s easy to adjust one-handed. It seals nicely around the face without obstructing my vision, and there’s no oversized brim. It does give a bit of a “mushroom” look when fully cinched, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I typically wear an XS in Arc’teryx jackets, and the Atom SV fits me perfectly in that size. The regular cut is one of my favorite aspects of this jacket—it’s roomy without feeling oversized, offers great mobility, and layers easily over a fleece or another midlayer.
There’s enough length for good coverage, the sleeves are spot-on, and nothing feels tight or restrictive. Compared to Arc’teryx’s more close-fitting women’s pieces, this jacket feels more forgiving, more comfortable, and more practical for everyday use.
Arc’teryx Atom Hoody ($300): A Lighter, More Versatile Alternative
The regular Atom Hoody sits right between the Atom SL and Atom SV in terms of warmth. With lighter insulation (60g Coreloft) and breathable fleece side panels, it’s better suited to shoulder-season hiking and slightly more uptempo winter use than the SV, and it fits slightly better in all-season layering systems. It’s also more packable, and you can stash it in one of its hand pockets. However, the Atom doesn’t provide the same level of cold-weather comfort as the SV, especially if you’re ambling rather than working up a sweat. If you want one jacket for mixed conditions and more movement, the regular Atom makes sense. If you want a warmer, cozier synthetic jacket for mid-winter use, the Atom SV is the better pick. Patagonia DAS Light Hoody ($349): Go More Technical
Along with the Atom SV, the DAS Light Hoody is one of the warmest synthetic puffies we’ve tested. Its 65-gram PlumaFill synthetic insulation offers a superb warmth-to-weight ratio, and this jacket is built to hoard heat—it’s far less breathable than the SV, and is made for chilly belays and campsites rather than movement. It’s also more dialed for high-alpine use. The DAS Light features a two-way zipper designed to handle harnesses and hipbelts, a chest pocket, a helmet-compatible hood, and a Pertex Quantum Pro shell that provides even better protection from moisture than the Atom SV’s material. This is a much more specialist piece, though, and will appeal most to climbers and mountaineers. For the rest of us, the Atom SV would be the more versatile pick. Arc’teryx’s top-end Atom is the warmest and most protective in the line. The SV’s premium, winter-ready build pairs with a cozy liner that makes it exceptionally comfortable to wear—just be sure you actually need this much insulation.
