Sustainability
The Fastpack 20 is one of the lowest-rated daypacks in terms of sustainability. We found no evidence that the Fastpack meets any of our criteria, meaning it does not include recycled or Bluesign-approved materials and lacks a PFAS-free durable water-repellent (DWR) treatment.
At the brand level, Ultimate Direction performs slightly better. The company implements several strategies to ensure responsible manufacturing. It is a member of the Fair Factories Clearinghouse, which provides suppliers with tools to track compliance efforts. Additionally, Ultimate Direction partners with Bureau Veritas, International Compliance Group, and UL Responsible Sourcing to conduct workplace audits. The company also works with factories certified through the Worldwide Responsible Accredited Program (WRAP). Ultimate Direction offers in-house repair services for its products, and, in 2022, the brand’s parent company, Exxel Outdoors, repaired over 1,700 items. Beyond that, however, the brand falls short in several key areas, including tracking greenhouse gas emissions and publishing an annual impact report. All told the Fastpack 20 is not a great sustainable choice.
Below we break down in detail all of the Fastpack 20's sustainability attributes at the product and brand level, including links to in-depth articles on relevant topics. For more, see our guide to the best hiking daypacks and our review of the Fastpack 20.
