Sustainability
The Boost 650 meets many of our product-level sustainability criteria, but Therm-a-Rest falls short in its brand-wide initiatives. The Boost features 100% recycled shell and lining fabrics, certified to the Global Recycled Standard. It’s insulated with Responsible Down Standard (RDS)-certified down, and the entire bag is treated with a PFAS-free durable water-repellent (DWR) finish. The Boost’s only notable drawback is a lack of Bluesign-approved materials.
Therm-a-Rest has taken some steps toward reducing its environmental impact but still has room for growth. On the positive side, its parent company, Cascade Designs, tracks greenhouse gas emissions through the Change Climate Project and has set reduction targets. However, Therm-a-Rest has not released an annual impact report since 2018, leaving a gap in publicly available data on its sustainability progress. While the company introduced reduced packaging that same year, there have been no updates on further improvements. The brand does offer repair services across its product line, which helps extend its gear’s longevity. However, it lacks a resale or recycling program for used gear. Overall, the Boost 650 is a decent choice for a sustainable sleeping bag, but other brands are making greater strides to reduce their environmental impact.
Below we break down in detail all of the Boost 650 20's sustainability attributes at the product and brand level, including links to in-depth articles on relevant topics. For more, see our guide to the best backpacking sleeping bags and our review of the Boost 650 20.
