Sustainability
The REI Flash Air 50 scores fairly high for sustainability, meeting more than half of our criteria. This pack is made from Bluesign-approved ripstop nylon with a PFAS-free durable water-repellent (DWR) finish. However, unlike similar packs, it does not incorporate any recycled materials.
At the brand level, REI falls short in one key area—it does not offer repair services, unlike many of its competitors in the outdoor industry. That said, the company is making significant sustainability efforts, including providing resale options for its packs through the Re/Supply program and partnering with Fair Trade USA to support responsible manufacturing. REI also prioritizes Forest Stewardship Council-certified or post-consumer recycled packaging, tracks greenhouse gas emissions using the Higg Index, and has been Climate Neutral Certified since 2020. While there’s room for improvement, the Flash Air meets many of our sustainability criteria, making it a solid choice.
Below we break down in detail all of the Flash Air 50's sustainability attributes at the product and brand level, including links to in-depth articles on relevant topics. For more, see our guide to the best backpacking packs and our review of the Flash Air 50.
