Sustainability
The REI Co-op Base Camp 6 ranks among the most sustainable car camping tents we reviewed. While it doesn’t incorporate recycled or Bluesign-approved materials, it features a PFAS-free durable water-repellent (DWR) finish on the canopy and rainfly. The tent also includes solution-dyed mesh, which reduces both water and energy use during the manufacturing process. These features help set the Base Camp apart in a product category that mostly lacks sustainability features.
At the brand level, REI has made impressive progress on several fronts. Its Re/Supply program helps keep used gear in circulation by giving customers a way to resell tents and other products, and the Co-op’s scale helps to make that program an industry leader. The company is also officially certified as Carbon Neutral, offsetting its emissions through verified carbon credits, and is working toward net-zero emissions by 2050. While REI leads in areas such as packaging—having largely phased out plastic in favor of FSC-certified and post-consumer waste paper—it still lacks in-house repair services, which could help extend the life of its products even further.
Below we break down in detail all of the Base Camp 6's sustainability attributes at the product and brand level, including links to in-depth articles on relevant topics. For more, see our guide to the best camping tents and our review of the Base Camp 6.
