Sustainability

Jan 23, 2026The Patagonia Better Sweater earns top marks for sustainability across nearly every one of our criteria. First, the Better Sweater is made from 100% recycled polyester fleece, including recycled polyester trims and pocket linings. All fabrics are also Bluesign approved, meeting strict criteria for environmental and human health. The Better Sweater is also dyed using a low-impact process that reduces the use of dyes, energy, and water compared to conventional methods. To round it out, the jacket is produced in a Fair Trade Certified (FTC) factory, ensuring fair wages and reduced environmental impact. Taken together, the Better Sweater sets a high bar among fleeces.
At the brand level, Patagonia continues to lead the outdoor industry in sustainability initiatives. It publishes a frequently updated sustainability website in place of a traditional annual report, detailing its progress toward material sustainability and achieving net-zero emissions by 2040. Patagonia backs its products with free repair services, runs a robust resale program called Worn Wear, and accepts used gear for recycling. All its paper packaging is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified or made from recycled content, and its plastic poly bags are certified to the Global Recycled Standard. All in all, the Better Sweater ranks among the most sustainability-aligned fleece jackets available.
Below we break down in detail all of the Better Sweater's sustainability attributes at the product and brand level, including links to in-depth articles on relevant topics. For more, see our guide to the best fleece jackets and our review of the Patagonia Better Sweater.
