Sustainability
The Outdoor Research Vigor Grid is a mediocre choice for sustainability among fleece jackets. On the upside, the Vigor Grid’s main fabric is Bluesign approved, made with 94% polyester and 6% elastane which meets strict standards for environmental safety. Unfortunately, neither of those materials includes recycled content, unlike leading fleeces like the Patagonia Better Sweater or Lightweight Synchilla.
At the brand level, Outdoor Research has made good progress toward sustainability initiatives but still lags behind leaders in areas like repair, resale, and recycling services. The company published its first annual impact report in 2023 but has not published one since. Outdoor Research tracks its carbon footprint, setting a Scope 3 emissions reduction target of 48% per unit of value added. It also offsets its Scope 1 and 2 emissions through renewable energy credits. The brand also uses recycled poly bags in its packaging but does not specify what other reductions it has made. All in all, there are more sustainable fleeces on the market.
Below, we break down in detail all of the Vigor Grid’s sustainability attributes at the product and brand level, including links to in-depth articles on relevant topics. For more, see our guide to the best fleece jackets and our review of the Vigor Grid Quarter Zip.
