Sustainability
The Talon 22 (women's Tempest 22) is a top-tier choice for sustainability, meeting more than two-thirds of our criteria. This pack is chock-full of recycled materials: The main compartment, lining fabric, and injection-molded backpanel are all 100% recycled. The Talon 22 is also a Bluesign Product, meaning it contains at least 90% Bluesign-approved fabrics and a minimum of 20% Bluesign-approved trims and hardware. Furthermore, this pack features a PFAS-free durable water-repellent (DWR) treatment.
At the brand level, Osprey checks most of our sustainability boxes. Under its All Mighty Guarantee, Osprey repairs any damage or defect on its products free of charge, no matter how old. It uses 100% recycled plastic poly bags for its product packaging and incorporates recycled or Forest Stewardship Council-certified paper along with card-based packaging in boxes and hangtags. Additionally, Osprey includes How2Recycle labels to help customers dispose of its packaging appropriately. Osprey’s carbon footprint is tracked through its parent company, Helen of Troy, which monitors its emissions using the Higg Index. It has set science-based targets for emissions reduction, committing to cut emissions by 46% by 2030. Helen of Troy also publishes an annual impact report that highlights Osprey’s sustainability initiatives. The only areas where Osprey falls short are its lack of a resale or recycling program and the absence of any responsible manufacturing programs.
Below we break down in detail all of the Talon's sustainability attributes at the product and brand level, including links to in-depth articles on relevant topics. For more, see our guide to the best hiking daypacks and our review of the Talon 22.
