Sustainability
The Osprey Aether (women’s Ariel) receives a slightly lower sustainability rating than other Osprey backpacking packs. Its main drawbacks are the lack of recycled materials and Osprey’s absence of resale or recycling programs and responsible manufacturing initiatives. However, there’s still plenty to like about this pack. It’s made from Bluesign-approved nylon and has a PFAS-free durable water-repellent (DWR) coating. Plus, with Osprey’s All-Mighty Guarantee, you can have the pack repaired anytime, free of charge.
At the brand level, Osprey incorporates sustainable materials into its packaging, using 100% recycled poly bags and recycled or Forest Stewardship Council-certified tags. Osprey’s parent company, Helen of Troy, tracks its greenhouse gas emissions using the Higg Index and has committed to a Science Based Targets Initiative-verified goal of reducing emissions by 46% by 2030. Helen of Troy also publishes an annual impact report that includes details about Osprey’s sustainability efforts. Overall, the Aether meets most of our criteria and remains a well-rounded choice for sustainability.
Below we break down in detail all of the Aether's sustainability attributes at the product and brand level, including links to in-depth articles on relevant topics. For more, see our guide to the best backpacking packs and our review of the women's Ariel 65.
