Sustainability
Compared to other Hoka hiking boots and shoes we’ve researched, the Mafate X Hike isn’t the most sustainable option. This boot doesn’t contain recycled materials, unlike the Anacapa and Kaha, which use recycled fabrics and accessories. Instead, the Mafate uses virgin fabrics that have higher environmental impacts than their recycled counterparts. It doesn’t incorporate Bluesign-approved materials, either. While the boot doesn’t have a durable water-repellent treatment or waterproof membrane, it is PFAS free.
As a brand, Hoka has made notable progress in terms of sustainability. It uses over 98% recycled or Forest Stewardship Council-certified packaging. Additionally, Hoka’s parent company, Deckers Brands, tracks its carbon footprint and environmental impact, publishing comprehensive information in its annual impact report. However, Hoka does not offer repair services, nor does it operate a resale or recycling program for used shoes. The company does not share details about its manufacturing practices or meet our responsible manufacturing standards either.
Below we break down in detail all of the Mafate X Hike's sustainability attributes at the product and brand level, including links to in-depth articles on relevant topics. For more, see our guide to the best hiking boots and our review of the Mafate X Hike.
