Sustainability
The Carbon Z trekking poles are a decent choice for sustainability. On the plus side, the poles feature a strap made from recycled materials, and you can replace the tips when they wear out. If a pole breaks, Black Diamond offers in-house repair services, though we did not include this as a criterion since most repairs simply involve replacing parts.
At the brand level, Black Diamond shows a mix of progress and gaps in its sustainability efforts. The company recently released its first impact report, outlining its efforts to reduce its environmental impact. From 2019 to 2021, Black Diamond reduced trekking pole packaging by nearly 50%, and it now uses 35% recycled cardboard. It also tracks its emissions using the Greenhouse Gas Protocol but does not publicly report emissions data. The brand recently set the goal to reduce its carbon intensity by 50% by 2030, but does not provide any more specifics. Lastly, Black Diamond does not offer a resale program for used gear.
Below we break down in detail all of the Distance Carbon Z's sustainability attributes at the product and brand level, including links to in-depth articles on relevant topics. For more, see our guide to the best trekking poles and our review of the Distance Carbon Z.
